Recycled Plastic = Pretty Purses
February 28th, 2008NOW IN OLIVE! We kind of made a vow a while back to thwart the notion that green=ugly. As with many of the other benefits of modern technology and innovation, the “Green” of today is anything BUT unattractive.
Case in point this Starbright Satchel. Designed to NOT deplete the Earth of any resources, this fun, eye-popping bag is designed from 100% PETE bottles, post consumer. In English: your bag is made entirely of plastic.
Lest you think this handbag feels akin to a grocery bag at your local supermarket, or something resembling Tupperware, think again. This is truly a marvel of innovation, and something you’ve got to see to believe. The purse is incredibly lightweight. It’s super sturdy for books and magazine. It’s well constructed, and yes. Recycled.

RECYCLED PLASTIC
Recycled Plastic is a high-quality polyester fiber made from 100% PETE bottles, post consumer. The fabric from this Starbright Satchel is made from recycled plastic (PETE), it is chemically and functionally nearly identical to those made from non-recycled fabrics.
The difference is that this bag is made without depleting the Earth’s natural resources and with properties such as strength, and softness. Recycling used soda and water bottles keeps billions of containers out of the world’s landfills, conserves crude oil and reduces harmful air emissions that lead to global warming. Currently only 3.5% of all plastics generated are recycled, compared to 34% of paper, 22% of glass and 30% of metals.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Leonor Mendoza is an award-winning artist whose work is part of the Art Museum of the Americas permanent collection in Washington DC. Her sculpture, also made from recycled materials, has been featured in shows around the world and dozens of private collectors have commissioned her pieces. Born in Venezuela, Ms. Mendoza currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. She is the designer of Engage Green Inc., and owns and operates the company with her husband Saeed Pourkay.
