Artful Lunch: Artist Series Bowls
January 6th, 2010
Are you sick of looking at your old maroon topped Tupperware container as you start to eat your lunch at work? You’ve been so good this year and have been packing
your lunch each morning saving some much needed money, but you cannot deny how depressed you get when you look at your old container.
All the energy and excitement that went into making the gourmet chopped salad inside is rendered null and void by the yellowing container that holds it. Well, no more! We found the best looking lunch containers from either side of the Mississippi! These adorable bowls are adorned with designs from Matte Stephens and Amy Ruppel, and have easy grip, twist off lids to prevent spills!
Matte Stephens on Matte: “I’m a 35 year old painter that lives in Portland Oregon. I love Mid 20th century industrial and graphic design like the work of Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, George Nelson/Irving Harper and fine artists of the same era like Ben Shahn and Paul Klee.” Check out his work HERE!
Amy Ruppel on Amy: “I am an artist/illustrator living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Birds, woodland animals and the flora they flaunt in are what I enjoy most.”
While she may be content to keep the details at a minimum regarding her talents we encourage you to go to her website and check out her other works of art (fyi – she does some seriously awesome sales from time to time)! Click HERE to see!

Hi Jane,
These bowls are the best. Here are the dimensions
6 inch round * 3.5 inches tall and it holds 2 cups of liquid comfortably.
Hope this helps

I’ve been aware of Matte’s art for several years and recently added an original painting to my collection. I emailed him today and told him about the bowl. He was excited that it was finally out!

The bowl comes with a cute little booklet that talks about artist Amy Ruppel and Matte Stephens. Amy’s designs have appeared on snowboards, paper weights and wellies!!
Matte’s work has been shown in galleries all over North America and Europe!
super sweet

These are perfect- just in time for back to school. They hold 20 oz. Great for soup when fall rolls in which is right around the corner!

Hi, I’m wanting to order these cute bowls, but was wondering about the quantity. Are they sold individually or as a set?

i have one of the catalina estrada bowls and it’s lovely, but what i don’t think you noted in the description is that the actual bowl is made by aladdin, a company i remember well from my lunchbox thermos. they are super sturdy and v. nicely made, and they have the gorgeous art too boot. so if you are wondering about quality, these are high quality.

I bought two of these bowls a month or so ago. They are very beautiful. However, they are quite often hard to open and close. I have had to ask co-workers to help me to open the bowl so I could access my salad in the lunch room!! The threads seem to need to be lined up exactly right in order for the bowl to open and close smoothly. They ARE lovely, but practical….. no so much!

Two questions — first, love the bowl!
1. Is there supposed to be a small indentation on the bottom of the bowl? Didn’t notice it before using and it feels (and looks) like it is there on purpose. Just want to make sure it didn’t warp in the microwave (used once — so I hope not)!
2. Are you going to get the 5th artist in the series, Heisuke Kitazawa? I love the art and the color.
Thanks!

Sara,
I just got one of these bowls in a Delight Mystery Box. Mine, too, has the little divot in the base. I naturally grabbed it there, so I suspect it’s for holding the bowl better. I love the way this bowl opens - twisting the round area with the artist’s work. It’s easy and I won’t have a repeat of the great ‘Opening My Soup’ disaster of ‘08 again.

I just got one of these last night in the mail and LOVE it - it is the perfect way to get food to and from work without spilling all over the place… plus, it’s cute.

What are these bowls made out of? Do you know if they make matching plates, too?

I love the design of mine, but I also have a lot of trouble opening and closing the lid…is there a trick to it? I’ve had almost spills because the lid wasn’t closed quite right. Is mine defective?
