Take Him Out To The Ballgame

June 3rd, 2008

When I first saw this Yankee Stadium pen (then Fenway Park, then Wrigley Field), my jaw dropped.  I am not the most knowledgeable baseball fan, but it is by far my most favorite sport.  I am however married to a die-hard Yankees fan, I have dear dear friends who are equally dedicated to the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians, and I understand all too well the passion and nostalgia attached to the team.

And it’s not really just about one specific baseball team, but the history that trails behind the institution of baseball as a whole, one of the very few intrinsically American traditions.

I am also not a connoisseur of pens per se.  But, these pens seemed to explain why people are passionate about both things: collecting pens, and watching baseball.

In 1973 Yankee Stadium replaced their original wooden seats with plastic, and an era was closed.  This pen is made from the original seats – salvaged then re-crafted by a dentist who has had a life-long passion for baseball.

No two pens are exactly the same due to age, type of wood and the direction of the wood grain.  It is laser engraved with its history: “Made of seat from XXX Stadium since 19XX.”  Each pen includes a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its origin.

A simple twist of the barrel extends the high quality, long lasting point. These pens are 5 1/2 inches in length.

If you’re still reading this far and haven’t bought this pen already, you’re probably more intrigued by the story vs. compelled to buy it.  I have a feeling the rest of you will scan the details and immediately understand what an incredibly special item this is.

For Father’s Day, as we all admittedly “never get Dad anything he really uses” (or wants!) this is a rare opportunity to say a million things with a timeless, hand-crafted and beautiful gift.

More About Ballpark Pens:

Bill Hartel is a native of the Chicago area and a lifelong baseball fan. He was the author of the first book on Chicago’s Wrigley Field, a Chicago Tribune bestseller in 1995, entitled A Day at the Park: In Celebration of Wrigley Field. His projects have been featured in the Wall Street Journal and dozens of other newspapers.

A dentist by day, entrepreneur by night, and baseball fan year round, his first product was the Wrigley Field Playoff dirt pen, which contained infield "Diamond Dust" collected at Wrigley Field on the day of the first 1989 NL Playoff game.

One day in 1990 Bill received a carload of Comiskey Park seats from his father. Fourteen years and several garages later, he was politely asked by his wife to "do something with that old wood."

Not many would think of turning ballpark seats into pens, but Bill did. Consequently, these historic stadiums - some now demolished - are revived for writing checks, signing autographs and having a collectible artifact to keep score with at the game.
