When we go to the shows looking for more great items to sell on Delight it is a several days long exercise in endurance. There are the items and companies we already know we adore, and then there are those companies that in the haze of a long afternoon inexplicably convince us to buy clogs embellished with Swarovski crystals. Moral of the story is…it’s a jungle out there and sometimes it can get ugly.
The Chikuno Cube is one of those items that fit in neither of those previously mentioned categories. It was a rare experience of stumbling upon a new item that we wanted to take home right away! The cube was being used in jars full of coffee grounds and other harsh smelling environments, and incredibly there wasn’t a smell to be had at the booth. The technology of the honeycomb pattern combined with the natural effects of the bamboo charcoal worked wonders!

I used a box of baking soda in my refrigerator to absorb the odors until I knocked it over one day! What a royal mess that was! These cubes are a fantastic idea. Thanks Delight!

Functional gadgets- I love them! I’ve been waiting for these to go online. Love that they recharge by putting them in the sun.

So, for $28.50 you get a single cube, or a tray of 3 cubes like in the photo?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:42 am
Marlo,
For $28.50 you do get one cube that is reusable over and over. You won’t ever have to buy another cube or box of baking soda for that matter. You simply place the cube in the sun for a couple of hours and it recharges.
Hope you this helps

Altho I could only wish that it was packaged in 3’s. I would imagine it is 1 for $28.00?
did they think of making it smaller - I really don’t have any area the size of 4 football fields to keep clean. Car, rooms, closets, fridge, small compact sizes. 1/2 the size for 1/2 the price would have been great. Then I would be buying multiples for myself and friends and families.

I just received mine (ok my wife ordered it) and it is really cool. And it works. Cool like I enjoy opening my fridge and staring at it cool.

I ordered 4!! They’re so great!! What nifty and eco-friendly idea, and so much less messy than baking soda which I never really thought worked that great anyway.

Amazing! First, I was bit suspicious how well this little cube would work, but….wow!! It is going to be the gifts to all my friends from now on.

Hi Delight, the cube looks really nice and i’d love to get a few. Do you ship to Australia?

This sounds really great, and I *LOVE!* the design (I’ll be buying it just for that), but consumers should click through to the photos at notcot.com where there’s a picture of the paper/directions that come with the cube. Here are quotes:
1) “Care Instructions; - Depends on the conditions, Chikuno Cube lasts about one year”
2) “Suggested Quantity and Effective Area; - 1 Chikuno Cube = 17 square feet”
Just be aware of it, is all I’m sayin’. (@jk - it doesn’t say it’ll deodorize the square footage of 4 football fields, only that the surface area of all the nooks and crannies in the cube equal the space of 4 football fields…) The care instructions and effective area square footage is totally fine with me, as long this info is presented, clearly. Delight does mention in the description of the cube that it “can be re-used for up to 1 year”. That’s clear. It’s just easy to make the football-field mistake… what marketers hope for! Sorry Jenny but “You won’t ever have to buy another cube or box of baking soda for that matter” rings a bit untrue.

Mel,
I think you are confused about some of the terminology we are using in regards to the Chikuno Cube. We stated that the cube has a surface area of four football fields, but made no claims to it covering that amount of space controlling odors. In fact, we stated that the cube is meant for fridges, closets and cars as well as other small spaces. As for the comment about not ever buying another box of baking soda, we intended that you’d be so happy with your cube that you’d continue to use the cubes, although they’d have to be replaced each year. I don’t know of many deodorizers that last for a whole year and aren’t chalk full of chemicals. We stand behind the cube and know you’ll be a fan if you try it!
Best,

Has anyone had any experience with whether this works with litter box odors?
May 30th, 2009 at 9:11 am
I’d like to know about using it for litterbox odors too! What a great idea, Tammy…I hadn’t thought of that until I saw your Q.

Tammy and Ellen,
I am the proud owner of 2 cats and the official cat lady at Delight HQ so its seems natural that I take the Chikuno Cube home and give it a test on the old litter box situation. Stay posted here and on the blog in the next week for my full review.

Are the cubes ready to go … right out of the box?
Or, do they need to be “charged” in sunlight before 1st use?
I’m “Delight”-ed to receive my order … but a bit disappointed that there are no instructions included.
June 3rd, 2009 at 9:26 am
Hi JustBetty,
Sorry you didn’t get instructions for your Chikuno Cube. To answer your question, yes, you can use it right out of the box. After about a month of use, it is suggested that it be refreshed by exposing it under direct sunlight for 6 hours. Depending on the conditions, the Chikuno Cube should last about 1 year. It is effective in an area up to 17 sq. feet.
Hope that helps!

Looks like a very effective invention. I have a real issue, however, with the false claims that the surface area of the cube equals that of four football fields. Do the math, people. The grid of hexagons on the face of the cube is approximately 24 units x 24 units. If the cube is 2 inches square, then each hexagon occupies a 0.083″ square space. If you (generously) double that space, just for estimating purposes to factor the increased area due to the hexagonal cross section, it would render 0.166″ of cross-sectional area. Now, let’s do the multiplication in inches: .166″ cross sectional area per unit x24(units)x24(units)x2″deep=191.232 square inches of surface area + the 4 smooth outer sides of the cube = 2″x2″x4(sides) = an additional 16 square inches for a grand total of 207.232 square inches. There are 144 square inches in one square foot. 207.232 divided by 144 = 1.439 square feet. A football field is 300 feet long and (say) 150 feet wide, for a total square footage of 45,000. The surface area of 4 football fields would then be 180,000 square feet. So, we have this cube with a total effective surface area of 1.439 square feet versus the total surface area of 4 football fields at 180,000 square feet. So you would really need to purchase 125,086 of these little cubes to equal the surface area of 4 football fields. Let’s see, $28.00×125,086 = $3,502,408. That’s a little too much money for air fresheners for my refrigerator or bathroom. Then there’s the space problem. 125,086 of these 2″ cubes at 8 cubic inches each would occupy a volumetric space totalling 1,000,688 cubic inches. These would occupy the inside space of about nine 20-cubic foot capacity refridgerators. Where in the world will I keep my food if I have filled up my nine refrigerators with these little cubes???? I absolutely detest false claims. The moral to this story: Don’t believe everything you read, especially in advertised claims. Think about it people. Do the math.

So does it work on the cat litter box ?
July 21st, 2009 at 10:24 am
Since the comment above seems to be misunderstanding the “surface area” issue, I would like to help to clarify. Chikuno cube is made from activated bamboo charcoal (activated carbon) is a form of carbon that has been processed at high temperature(800 Celsius) level to make it extremely porous to create a large surface area. 1gram of activated bamboo charcoal processed accordingly contains approx.7,500sf of surface area. Which mean where looks smooth & solid in chikuno cube (net weight 30g) also has invisible numerous holes. This adds up to the surface area which almost equal to the size of 4 football fields as stated. Anyway, Chikuno cube works and pretty!

Wow, I was really excited about these until I saw the price. $28.50 buys a LOT of baking soda in the mere year these are forecasted to last.

Just have to say these are great. Like, really, really, great.
