Back To Basics
October 26th, 2007
There’s something to be said about getting back to the basics. I mean waaaaay back.
As someone who loves to retreat to the kitchen when I’m super-stressed out, new gadgets and cookware to entice me to stay longer is sometimes just what the doctor ordered.
When I discovered Pomaireware™ earlier this year I was completely intrigued. First, I love love loved the pig tureen and serving spoon - for purely aesthetic reasons – but after learning more about this clay bakeware from Chile, I could feel a new cooking obsession coming on.
Since the middle of the 19th century, Pomaire, Chile has been producing distinctive earth ware that is both functional and decorative. The artisans have preserved the tradition of working with clay using the same techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation.
Each piece is dried naturally, then smoothed and burnished with an agate stone before being fired. No glaze or varnish is used. Consequently, it has its own defects and discolorations that in no way affect the performance of each piece. That is why throughout Chile it is difficult to dine without something in a Pomaireware bowl or pot.
So, in the spirit of Delight.com’s quest to discover items that are not only fabulous, but also insanely useful, we couldn’t pass up this adorable and completely multi-functional tureen/serving dish. In the time I’ve used this product, I’ve filled it with:
- Paella
- Casseroles
- Guacamole and Salsa (looks SO cute!)
- Vegetables & side dishes
…all to the glowing accolades of my dinner guests. (Seriously, that pig is just really fab).
All Pomaireware items are lead-free, oven safe up to 450F, stove top safe (electric w/diffuser) and microwave safe.
And if you become obsessed like me, the side effects are only positive, I promise.

I already have this bowl–bought it years ago from another site–and it’s ridiculously cute! I’ve given it as a gift on two occasions, including once when I brought it over with chili dip already inside it. I love it, love it, love it.

I just bought this dish and it’s really great-looking. My friends laughed (in a good way) when they saw it at dinner. However, I washed it yesterday before using it the first time and the spoon head broke off the handle, even though I was hand-washing it and I’m not all that strong. Major bummer.

So about a day or two after I left the comment about the broken spoon, a fresh (and strong) one arrived at my door. Thanks so much!
