Everybody Goes Talk Talk
August 3rd, 2008
Every once in a while something comes around that makes you go, “Ack! That’s my idea!” We all know the feeling - you had an idea some time ago and it comes to fruition in someone else’s hands…i.e. the flowbee, the thermos, the swifer, etc. Granted, it’s the effort to get it made that counts, the feeling is no less bothersome. It’s one of the great scapegoats of life…if only I had followed through…
TableTopics gave me this feeling. It was many a year ago when I sat with a friend jokingly hatching a plan to have nights where you get your friends together around a table with a bunch of three-by-five cards that have different things written on them that one could discuss. “DMV,” discuss! “Marlo Thomas’s husband,” discuss! “What’s up with brick bugs?” Discuss!
Several years pass, I had yet to cultivate my moment of genius and along comes TableTopics. Okay, maybe TableTopics is a little more abstract and accessible in its topics, and let’s not get into how much catchier “TableTopics” is than “Discuss!” Ack!
But really, the best nights are the simple ones – just sitting around with your friends talking about anything and everything. TableTopics are a great way to spice up those conversations, and steer clear of the big two no no’s (politics and religion), not to mention the more boring ones (i.e. work). The topics are basic ideas on love, experience, traveling, and so much more!
So stop trying so hard to make the night interesting - the restaurants, the theme parties, the costumes. Ack. Just sit back and talk…we bet you’ll like what you hear.

“I tested this game out at an awkward family gathering. We typically end up just talking about work and TV shows, but the interesting questions actually led to a really fun night!!!”

These are a hoot. I was at a dinner party last month and someone whipped them out and we couldn’t stop laughing. I think we ended up sitting around the table for three hours.

Is there an age range on these?

Moe - the TableTopics are appropriate for all ages, although especially created for adults.

Love it - just need friends, alcohol, and the patio outside and we are all set for an evening of fun

These cards are great for starting conversations at the dinnertable with kids. When a family member found themselves parenting their grandchildren, these cards provided a good way to get the conversation going.
I also use the cards for icebreakers at business meetings. I usually prescreen the cards to make sure we don’t touch on sensitive areas.

I used these about a month ago at a bachelorette party- (we used a specific set, don’t remember which edition of TT it was). But an otherwise awkwardly “early” evening for a bunch of 30-something women turned into a fun and fabulous night. I highly recommend a set!

PS- if you’ve spent a long time on one “topic,” it can be really fun to do a couple “lightning” style- just whip around with short, fast answers- also fun!

does the to-go edition have different questions than the original one? or are they picked out from the original?

Grace,
Actually, the questions in the to-go edition are different. They relate specifically to travel whereas the original set relates to general knowledge and life, but both are a blast!
Best,

This is very cool and could get me invited to more cocktail parties or exotic locations where I can entertain my hosts with topics galore!
