My lunchbox is better than yours…Oots Lunchbox
September 12th, 2009
The lunchbox holds a strange place in American culture. From metal splatter painted pails to plastic boxes with Star Wars’ stickers, they serve a very important daily purpose, but have also
become symbols of our childhood and beyond. We keep the lunchboxes we have from elementary school forever to remind us of easier times, and may even end up paying ridiculous amount of money for that original Star Trek lunchbox our boyfriend so covets.
While our Goonies lunchbox will always be our favorite, we have been on a search for a lunch box that was a little more useful and a bit more grown up. Imagine our excitement when we found Oots! By combining the simplicity and ingenuity of Dutch design with some serious utility, Oots has managed to make the Cadillac of lunchboxes. With a strap for your water bottle or Klean Kanteen and room enough five containers in the Deluxe edition, these boxes are downright fabulous!
More about Oots:
With a focus on food related necessities for babies and kids, the OOTS! products distinguish themselves from the crowd by offering refreshing, modern designs with real functionality. The OOTS! design savvy, so far, has been applied to baby bibs, melamine dish sets, and lunch boxes. Other day-to-day products that are screaming for an edgy, original and elegant new treatment are in the works!
OOTS! was started in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2004 by Arian Roefs (Managing Director) and Godfried Konings (the Designer), both originally from The Netherlands. A Dutch Design sense and no-nonsense approach are staples of this enterprising duo.
The name OOTS! is a tribute to Sjaan, Arian’s mom: Anytime anything surprises her, she utters this deadpan exclamation, and then continues with the business at hand.

I totally disagree with JB’s comment above I totally love this lunch box. I think that bringing my lunch can be super boring most days, but this beautifully designed lunch box would keep me totally inspired to pack my lunch in the morning. Keep up the great work Delight.

…. except for the fact that, if you add your water bottle, it no longer has a handle? huh?

It does look like an ultra cool lunch box, very versatile and handy, but I do agree with JB - $45 for plastic does seem a bit steep. I’d rather bring my pyrex glassware to hold my lunch. =) Cute box though- does it come in other colors?

Perfect portion control if you get the containers.
It makes it like a Japanese bento box. These are a big part of why the Japanese are in better health than Americans. They either pack the with their meals or pay for a service that does the same for them. You get several items that all pack in to the one large container. Choose the items by size and you’ve got a diet system that can keep you on track. For instance, your meat servings should be about the size of a pack of cards. So you would pick the one about that size. It takes the thinking and weighing out of it.
You’d usually pay a lot more than this for an actual bento box in the US, since they’re usually made of metal or enamel. Most of them also won’t survive most dishwashers.

I’m with JB. How do you carry this around once the Klean Canteen/water bottle is added? Is there an additional handle?

Michael,
I bought the Oots lunch box about about a month ago and love it. What I did so that I could squeeze the water bottle into the top is just length the strap. There is a little wiggle room there that makes this an option. I agree with what Mike wrote about I really like that this helps me pack smaller portions for my lunch.
I hope this helps.

I LOVE this thing!! For the first time I actually WANT to take my lunch to work. Love it.

This looks beautiful, but does a sandwich fit in the large container? My lunches are a little less mundane, but I couldn’t use it for a kid if a sandwich didn’t fit.

Kim,
I have the Oots and bring it to work everyday and love it. A small sandwich totally fits in the big container. What I have found though is the Oots box totally is super flexible. Some days all I bring is soup and that fits perfect in the big container. I will then put my sandwich in a ziplock bag with an apple on the side you are good to go! The portion sizes of these containers are really fantastic for the waist line!
Hope this helps

Can anyone tell me if these are insulated in any way?

HI Leslie,
The Oots lunchbox is not insulated!
Hope this helps

I like to bring big salads to work - is there a container that would fit a large salad?
June 21st, 2009 at 5:29 pm
For those who already have one: I am interested in getting these for my kids; some questions:
1. Could the strap be completely removed if, say, I wanted to replace it with a longer one they could hang from a shoulder?
2. Could I fit a stainless steel thermos in it? One of my kids really likes soup for lunch and I pack it in a thermos (the squat, wider ones, not the tallish coffee ones) so it will stay warm.
3. Actually, if someone would be ever so kind as to measure it and post the dimensions, that would be most helpful!
Thanks so much!

Hi Ana,
We also added the dimensions on to the Delight Oots page. Thank you for the great question!
Have a great day

Hi Erin,
I pack a salad for lunch almost everyday and the large container that comes with the lunch box is plenty big for salads

Cute lunch box. Can the strap be used to carry the box with a secured water bottle? Is the water bottle actually secure when/if you use the strap? How is the strap secured?
Thanks!
July 9th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Hi Katie,
Yes, the strap can be used to carry our super cute Oots Lunchbox with a secured water bottle. The water bottle is secure when you use the strap because it is attached with velcro.
Hope that helps!
All the best,
Lynne

I love the look of the lunchbox but find that it’s difficult to get the lid on. I have to spend a lot of time fiddling with it to get it on in the morning. Also, the lids of the containers don’t fit very tightly, so if you’ve got anything that sloshy or might dry out, that’s a drawback. I do agree with other reviewers that the containers are a nice Bento box type arrangement. I’m about 75% pleased with the purchase.

A couple of people have asked this, but I don’t see an answer in this thread: with a water bottle attached, how do you carry this lunchbox? Gorgeous colours!
August 25th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Hi Kristen,
If you attach the water bottle to the top there is a tiny bit of room left on the top of the strap for carrying the lunchbox.

Just finished my lunch, and wanted to let everyone know how satisfied I am with my Oots lunchbox. The containers are the prefect size & they’re BPA free!
September 28th, 2009 at 3:27 am
Looks good…and very similar to a system I currently use. I love containers like this that allow for portion control and when properly packed–no tossing around of the food. The only big problem I see (aside from the high price–but if it were worth it, I would pay it) is that there is no room for a freezer pack to keep the food cold until lunch time.
September 28th, 2009 at 5:06 am
I’m so tempted to get one of these, but it seems if it’s not insulated then it only works for non-perishable foods or if you are going to work and can put your lunchbox in the office fridge. The other option would be to put an ice pack in the top. I can’t tell if there’s room once all the containers are in to tuck a flexible ice pack on top of it all before putting the lid on.
Does anybody know?
I hope so, because if I can’t keep the food cold then this is useless to me unfortunately.
September 28th, 2009 at 5:19 am
how do you keep foods cold enough to be safe to eat by lunch time in this? if you plan to use it for children.
September 28th, 2009 at 5:22 am
Are the containers leak-proof? I like to bring sauces or dressings and need a tight seal.
September 28th, 2009 at 6:16 am
Ditto rjkmom’s question. Is there room under the lid once it’s fully loaded for one of those flexible ice packs? If not, and it’s not insulated, it’s not really safely usable for those who can’t store it in a refrigerator ’til lunchtime.
Anyone know if there’s room to accommodate one of those ice packs?
September 28th, 2009 at 6:59 am
I suspect that the positive comments about this thing are delight.com employees! Anyone who’d pay this much for a plastic lunchbox is half a bubble off.
September 28th, 2009 at 7:25 am
I am also wondering if the containers are leak proof. I sometimes bring soup and I don’t want to worry about it sloshing all over the place. Thanks.
September 28th, 2009 at 7:35 am
Hi gals,
We just pop our whole lunchbox in the fridge to keep things cold. As far as leak-proof, the boxes are tight, and because they’re all designed to fit suggly in the the Oots container, there really shouldn’t be any leaks.
We have brought sauces in our Oots, but we don’t really recommend soup, unless it’s something hearty like chile.
For soups, you should snag this gem:

Hope this helps!

I love the portion control. But I am having trouble with the lid. Is there a trick to getting the top in?
October 9th, 2009 at 8:11 am
Hi Christine,
I have an Oots lunchbox too and I am in love with it. I had a little trouble with the lids of the containers but now I just snap a rubber band around them and they work perfect making it easy to take them in and out of lunchbox.
