Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me…
June 7th, 2008
Light up your inner child with this summer’s must-have outdoor accessory. This Sun Jar designed by Tobias Wong is beautiful, nostalgic and solar-powered.
We’ve nestled this amongst the roses in our garden, and used it as a centerpiece for outdoor dining. Any way you look at it, the Sun Jar’s soft amber glow lights up everything we love about summer.
And when it’s cold and snowy – we have a bit of sunshine at our finger tips to warm dark and gloomy nights.
Made with a traditional Mason jar and high tech energy efficient lighting! Captured inside the jar are a highly efficient solar cell, rechargeable battery and low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in sunlight the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. This energy is then used at night to power the three LED lamps inside the jar. The light is diffused by the frosted jar and give the appearance of sunlight emitting from the (warm colored LED lights are used to give a more natural and warm light).
You may have noticed that there is no switch on the sun jar - in fact there are no visible controls at all - there is a clever light sensor inside that automatically activates the lights when it gets dark or lights are turned out!
Mason Jars are not only beautiful but by their very nature they are completely water tight - so the Sun Jar can happily be left outside in any weather conditions. A perfect garden light or night light for a kids bedroom.

Would be even more interesting with some sort of painting or decorative detail on it, which I’d have my mother do if I bought it. Can that be done or does it ruin the solar power capacity??

It could be a fun project for kids to paint the jar or have sticker stencils to paint. Hey, somebody invent that! We got ours to celebrate the Summer Solistice. And it’s worked so my little son now knows it’s time to go to bed, because his jar has a little bit of sunshine in it!
