Whiskey Stones: Good To The Last Drop

August 13th, 2009

After many years of “alcohol exploration” I have finally, in my 30’s, concluded what I like to drink. Here’s the breakdown:
All the time, and time: Red Wine (pref Cabernet or a mind blowing Syrah)
In the summer: Rose (has to be very dry and not too sweet and ice cold)
Also in the summer: Beer! (Hefferweisen with an orange is the best!)
In the winter: Guiness. Can’t be beat.
Special Occasions: Manhattans.

The wine and beer is a no-brainer, but for the past several years I have developed an affinity for Bourbon, and there is always the quest for the perfect Manhattan on the rocks. Personally speaking, I think my Dad and I make the best ‘Hattans, but there are a few bars out there (mainly in NYC) that know how to do it up right as well.

The secret to a great Manhattan starts of course with the bourbon.  It needs to be sweet, syrupy, oak aged and from the south.  There is something really seductive about bourbon to me, it carries a far greater complexity than say vodka.  Maybe it’s because I’m obsessed with Tennessee Williams and the south.  Maybe I just like things you have to wrap your arms around…like really strong coffee and deep dark chocolate.

On rare occasions, I can sip really amazing bourbon on the rocks, but I have to admit I’m not the champ I’d like to be in that dept.  Instead the Manhattan does the trick…mixed with sweet vermouth and toped with a splash of cherry juice and a twist of lemon, this drink is just about perfect in my book.

Which is why I fell head over heals for these Whiskey Rocks.  There’s nothing worse than something you love getting diluted or warm, and these rocks answer both those problems.  Store them in your fridge and bring them out into your favorite rocks glass and pour your drink accordingly.

The seduction will continue to the very last drop.

  3. Mindi

Yup, kill me now, I’ve seen it all!!

  4. kirk

A fantasitc item. Great job, once again Delight!

  5. jason

this is the stupidest product I’ve ever seen. Whiskeys need a little water in the form of ice or just water to release the full aroma and flavor. This is just dumb.

  6. Steffy

Wow, Jason! Dumb? A little harsh, don’t ya thin?. There are people who like their whiskey chilled but don’t want the ice diluting their drink. Personally, I think it’s a great idea!

  7. genna

um. I’m a bartender and a very upscale bar and I agree that these are a really cool idea. Jason, you are dumb.

  8. Jen

Tracey - are you going to tell that whole story and not tell what your favorite brand of bourbon is? C’mon, give up the goods, girl!

  9. Mickiah

Great Idea about starting a “notcot” profile and posting on there. I frequently visit delight and I am a daily viewer of “notcot.org” so now I have the best of both worlds.
    Good times indeed Tracey.

Whiskey Stones: The best invention since Beer Nuts!

  11. Marco Esquandolas

Was originally invented by soapstone workers in Perkinsville, Vermont

  12. Ina

Perfect gift for my guy friend. He drinks a lot.

  13. Lauren

I would like to give these to my husband…his birthday is the last week of July. Will they be back in stock soon?
I found them on another website but the shipping would be 50% of the total cost! Please re-stock soon!!!

  14. Rob

I never put ice in whisky because diluting it spoils the taste. I’m sending this page to my wife - my birthday is soon! I see you’ve got UK delivery too, good one.

  15. Personalized Stationery

Talk about an original gift…there are so many people who would appreciate these rocks, even including those who may not drink so much…

  16. Katrina Russo

On rare occasions, I can sip real bourbon on the rocks.

  17. TBA

“Rinse and air dry following every use”

To much trouble when you just want to get drunk. (Yes, I’m lazy.)

  18. Roxana

I had to get one for my dad, he loved it.

  19. Daisy

yeah…I love spending money on stuff that I never use. I get ice for free…it’s pretty handy…but WOO! Thanks for letting me buy something I don’t need, delight.com :D

  20. Julie

Whoa! Easy there Daisy- What’s with the overblown sarcasm? Slow day at work?

  21. Daisy

    you have nooo idea.

  22. Max

    Great for some Woodford Reserve!

  23. Matt

With age I have grown a great appreciation for a finely crafted single malt. It slows things down after a hectic workday, savor the flavors and appreciate the time well spent to craft such a drink. My favorite today and not too hard on the pocket is Balvenie 12yr old DoubleWood. It has such a great combination of smooth, sweet and bite all mixed together. I’m eager to see how much better it can be with the stones as a compliment. I’m even more excited as Balvenie starts experimenting with rum casks instead of sherry. It will be a long wait to sample the result but I’m sure it will be worth the time.

  24. Ed White

For a nice Macallan 18 or even a 50 yr while we’re at it hehe. Yes i know i went with the yankees but still its a great product. Best is seeing the price at the standard NY. $9 for a 12 year and $12 for a 15 year, best deal in NY, i asked if it was a mistake, they couldnt get me to leave.

  25. Adam

Stranahans Colorado Whiskey. Each new batch is aged in different castes, giving almost every bottle a different flavor. So good!

Ordered these for my husband for Christmas and while I was excited about the coolness (no pun intended) of this product, I was a little disappointed in actual use. First, the stones are quite small and really don’t cool the drink sufficiently to bother with them. Second, we ruined a good glass of 23-year-old bourbon because the stones released some cloudiness into the drink. And yes, the stones were rinsed before first use. Fortunately not too pricey, but not too satisfying either.
