Be Nice to the Banana
March 20th, 2008
Now, we know the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but quite frankly, we’ve always found bananas to be the more appropriate fruit for that idea. With all the Potassium you need to keep healthy and all the energy you need to keep going all day, Bananas are the fun, versatile fruit that really pays you back!
While we love bananas, we don’t love how bruised and brown they get so quickly after they are bought at the store. The moment you bring them home it is a race against time to eat them while they are tender, not mushy and canary, not brown. Thank Umbra for an ingenious little solution to this age-old problem. Turns out if you keep the bananas at room temperature and keep them from touching other fruit, they won’t spoil as fast or cause other fruit spoil in return.
If that wasn’t enough to make us love this product, it folds up after use so as to be stored in a drawer and take up as little space as possible! So stop letting your bananas get beat up, and be nice to them with the Amazing Banana Split!

so does this really help to keep bananas fresher? I like the idea since they have gone up so much in cost but just want to get some more info.

Hi Dani -
“Turns out if you keep the bananas at room temperature and keep them from touching other fruit, they won’t spoil as fast or cause other fruit spoil in return.”
The banana hanger is a pretty old idea - we loved the new design of this, and didnt realize until it was explained to us, just how great the benefits of hanging your bananas away from your other fruit will in fact keep them fresher longer.
I’m a “no brown on my banana” kind of gal, so this is a must have for me!
(and don’t forget that it folds up flat when not in use, so you can easilly slip it into a drawer or cabinet to save space on your counter!)

[…] As frequent consumers of bananas–you can never have enough potassium–we couldn’t help but smile at this somewhat silly but somewhat functional banana-holding device. What’s the point? It keeps your bananas out of the fruit bowl and bruise-free. We suppose the same results could be achieved with a hook and string, but sometimes designers have to have their fun too. […]
